Voting, then Colorado Critters, A Colorado State Open Thread, 6/17/2024

Today was the last day to mail your ballot and be (pretty) sure it would arrive by next Tuesday’s date. If you still haven’t voted yet, drop it off at a county clerk’s office or one of the voting boxes to make sure your voice is heard. I had only two contested elections, but I still put a vote down for every race. I think candidates get a boost even if they’re running unopposed in the primary.

Kyle Clark, one of my favorites on local news here on 9News in Denver brought up a podcast tonight  on his excellent show “Next” that has four episodes available and more to come. It’s called “Lauren Boebert Can’t Lose”, but contrary to your immediate thoughts, he says it’s not a fluff piece promoting Boebert, but it takes a deep, serious and even look into her background and what has made her into what she is today. I haven’t heard any of the podcast yet, but I’ll check it out and it will give me information to fight back against any Boebert Backers I happen to run into between now and the primary or general election. I want Ike McCorkle to be the Democrat representing eastern Colorado, but it’s going to be a tough fight.

They may be unusual and neat to see, but it's all for show. They're Demons. Or Tricksters. Or Murderers of little critters. But they're just being what they are. Coyotes

This critter — not one of mine — actually, belonging to no one and enjoying life that way, was freely wandering through my neighborhood in the middle of the day. Very pretty, very healthy, and in the prime of life.  The Colorado State Open Thread is for the critters of the four and two legged (heck, even the six, eight and hundred legged denizens of Colorado). Enjoy them, and then put your comments down below. Many of you live where you can see these on a frequent basis, but they’re not always visible as often as we’d like.

I’ve included a number of photos of visitors near to my house in the 5+ years I’ve lived here. Most of the large predator photos have been taken with critter cameras around the exterior, but some have been taken with cell phones and digital cameras.

Mule deer, female, showing the reason for the name. Out of the mountains, white-tail deer are more common, but they gradually change species as the elevation rises.

Mule deer fawn, left behind while Mama went to refuel. Mama was gone for several hours and we got worried, but she came back and collected her fawn.

These are getting more common, though around my house I’ve mostly seen females.

I don’t have a good photo of a mountain lion. They’re here at night and only on our critter cameras.

Turkey hen looking for food. I don’t have a photo of a male displaying, but I’ve certainly heard them calling for the females to come look.

A Douglas tree squirrel, aka a Chickaree for it’s call when it’s annoyed. It’s small enough to fit through the bars on my feeder. The chipmunks are also small enough.

I usually have one of these hanging around my front door in the fall.

Of course, I have many more, but this is a pretty good representation of the wildlife around my house in Estes. Y’all are welcome to come up and stay a day or two.

Don’t forget July 20th, 4PM, for a Meetup at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg. It isn’t strictly limited to people who are members of DKos; you’re welcome to bring any Kos-Kurious friends you might have.

I look forward to any comments you have down below. The floor is yours, on whatever topic.
