Colorado Beasts and Pics in Snow. A Colorado State Open Thread, January 15, 2024

I’ve been posting a number of Open Threads that focus on political subjects lately, including my second-most recommended diary in my seventeen years here, and quite honestly, I have resolved to not do this one on the Boeberts, the races for the various Congressional districts, the new session for the Colorado Legislature where the Republicans filibustered the very first bill, or any of those things.

I will mention that the Colorado Republican Party has voted to endorse The Former Defeated Guy for their nomination to be fuhrer, taking the decision away from the rank and file members of the party and those who would want to cast a vote for their own darn selves. Taking the vote from the unwashed masses because they know better is how Republican elite roll, though.

I do want to post one notice, though, in case it has slipped your mind.

Today is the last day to get health care coverage if you get it through Connect for Health Colorado. I saw in an official email where it said Tuesday the 16th was the deadline, because of the holiday, but the website says today is the day. If you don’t select your plan by today, for plans that will start February 1st, you’ll need to wait until your situation changes (e.g. you get married, divorced, grow ancient so you lose access to your parents’ insurance, you welcome a new bambino to the family, you lose your job’s insurance, etc) before you can get covered through the ACA again. At least until open season at the end of the year. Since you might need to provide information, start ASAP. You only have a few hours left.

Instead, what I’m going to just do is to provide some photos of our beautiful state under the fresh blanket of snow Mother Nature gave us this weekend. Sure, it was bitterly cold and we can feel sorry for those caucassers (caucasians?) in Iowa this evening, but hey, if they insist on having their caucus early just so they can vote for whoever the meanest, bigoted Republicans are, they can have their cold temperatures and snowy weather.

I was out and around yesterday and I was impressed that the animals were as well. Enjoy the pictures, and in the comments, please add any you care to post.

Most animals in Estes Park are happy to ignore people so long as we don’t bother them.

No, I’m not going to approach a thousand pound mama with her baby

Pope John Paul II visited here in 1993 and blessed this church. My wife married me here (before we wed each other) late one night after midnight on our way to Estes Park, by repeating “I wed thee” three times.

A Douglas Tree squirrel, aka a Chickaree, eating bird feed suet. These are much smaller than the fox squirrels found in the lower elevations, but I have had a fox squirrel visiting my feeders. I think it came to the mountains for the summer.

A flock of bushtits enjoying a suet cake with hot sauce. They can’t taste it or be bothered by it, but mammals like squirrels don’t like it.

A cold blooded creature — possibly a reptile, since it’s not moving and it has snow built up on it. I never realized they would have such vivid colors.

I hope all y’all are staying warm in these frigid conditions — the high in Estes today is supposed to get up to -3 degrees, and I look forward to any pictures, issues or stories you might have on this MLK day. The floor is yours...
