Colorado State Open Thread, 11/20/2017

As the northern world slides into darkness earlier and earlier every evening (more so if you’re in Washington, DC), the state of Colorado is not immune to the Trumpster’s effects.  My mood has been made worse by the excesses of enthusiasm for hurting people and families of less than lily white skin by the ICE agents who scour the state for “illegals” and are eager to separate families without regard to the need of the parent(s) to be the providers for their US citizen children, without following the guidance of local politicians and it appears without even following the publicized rules they’re claiming to follow (going after the bad hombres and not people who’ve never had any interaction with law enforcement at all).

If you’re from Colorado, or even paying attention, you’ve heard of the mother who took refuge inside a Denver church to protect her from ICE and the brave stance the church took in providing sanctuary.  My section of Denver (close to South Federal Boulevard) has a lot of people of Latin/Hispanic heritage and I have noticed a difference over the last several months in how they regard me as a white senior.  Perhaps I’m just being imaginative, but if I were in their shoes, I think I’d be wary of any whites, and I think that’s precisely what Trump, Bannon and the rest of their ill ilk are looking for — dividing people along racial and ethnic lines so they don’t come together for the common cause of standing in the way of the Oligarch’s agenda.

Well, I hope you folks have plans for a lovely Thanksgiving.  We’re flying in my son-in-law and his girlfriend for a day of excessive food and beverage consumption, followed by a rousing game of “Cards Against Humanity”.  We also have another 2-4 people coming over.  The menu will be:

  • Turkey with stuffing (boiled in a bag, but that’s how my wife insists on doing it over my protests)
  • Ham roasted on my smoker with homemade peach preserves.
  • Brandied Cranberries
  • Mashed red potatoes (with sour cream, butter, salt and pepper to taste)
  • Green beans with almond slivers
  • Apple pie with dutch crumb top, ice and whipped cream to taste
  • Costco pumpkin pie
  • Some sort of dip to go with chips while playing cards
  • White and red wines, hard cider and various other drinks.

Please let me know your plans, if you’d care to share.  If not, perhaps some family traditions.

This party ought to raise me out of my doldrums.  I wish you a happy holy day season.  Thanksgiving is one of my favorite ones.
